What You'll Do
The Associate Director's primary responsibility is the identification, cultivation and solicitation of individual prospects who can make major gifts of $100,000 and above. The Associate Director manages a portfolio of 100+ prospects and donors securing major and planned gifts of $100,000 or more on behalf of Student Life, from alumni and friends to support programs and priorities agreed upon by the Student Life and the Office of University Development. You will be the primary development liaison to: M Dining/Maize & Blue Cupboard; student mental wellness programs; the Blavin Scholars; Student Accessibility and Accommodations Services/Adaptive Sports. You will also partner with the Assistant Director of Parent & Family Giving to provide broad-based comprehensive development support to other programs within Student Life. Frequent travel is required as well as regular participation in evening and weekend activities. The Associate Director will work in close consultation with Student Life program leaders and associate vice presidents.

Responsibilities*
Major Gifts Development (75%)
- Emphasize prospect discovery and qualification, manage a portfolio of 125 - 200 major gift prospects.
- Conduct 100+ personal visits with prospects and donors per year, and participate in 20+ solicitations per year.
- Identify, qualify, solicit, and steward a portfolio of prospects with capacity to make major gifts of $100,000 and above.
- Gather data, assess prospects, and develop strategies designed to realize the current and life-time giving potential of individual prospects.
- Ensure appropriate contact, facilitate or make solicitations, and ensure stewardship.
- Partner with the Executive Director to enhance Student Life's fundraising success, including supporting the Vice President and other unit leaders in major gift solicitations.
- Maintain relationships with academic and other unit colleagues on campus, by demonstrating collaboration in the development community.
- Through collegial consultation and cooperation, demonstrate and be a model of collaboration in the U-M development community, while representing Student Life's values.
- Coordinate and facilitate activity that will directly result in prospect identification, engagement and successful solicitations, including advising executive officers, deans and development colleagues on the culture, expectations and needs of the University's constituents.
- Prepare an annual portfolio plan.
- Have a comprehensive understanding of the Student Life priorities and make a verbal and written case for supporting important programs, matching the interests of prospects to Student Life's specific needs.
- Record information about prospects and donors using DART, the University's donor and alumni tracking database.
- Develop materials used by the Vice President or unit directors, for meetings, visits or individual contacts.
- Ensure appropriate stewardship practices are implemented for donors to Student Life.
Volunteer management and additional responsibilities (25%):
- Serve as primary development liaison to 5 - 7 Student Life units; ensure unit directors are completing assigned development tasks. Remain aware of development priorities for each unit and serve as a resource for other gift officers in this regard.
- Partnering with the Assistant Director of Parent & Family Giving, serve as a development resource for other units within Student Life.
- Participate in Student Life events as appropriate. This includes but is not limited to: creating and managing campus-wide activities, and on- and off-campus donor events.
- Maintain connections with the Office of University Development, attending monthly Development Council meetings and other meetings, workshops, training and gatherings.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree required
- 3 or more years of relationship-based fundraising experience or relevant experience working with and securing major gifts, including a demonstrated track record with the ability to qualify and move prospects through the cultivation/solicitation cycle.
- Must be able to travel 50%-60% of the time both in state and throughout the country. This includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Sound knowledge of laws, practices and philosophy of charitable giving
