Job Description
The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME: https://bme.umass.edu ) and the Institute of Applied Life Sciences (IALS: https://www.umass.edu/ials/ ) at UMass Amherst are seeking a tenure-track faculty member in any area of Biomedical Engineering who will establish a research program with translational potential. While we are seeking talented applicants qualified for an assistant professor position, under exceptional circumstances, highly qualified candidates at other ranks may receive consideration. The appointment is expected to begin September 1, 2021.
The successful applicant will be a member of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and a part of the Institute for Applied Life Sciences, an interdisciplinary translational catalyst on campus that also manages a diverse array of centralized core equipment facilities (https://www.umass.edu/ials/core-facilities ).

Requirements
The successful candidate should have earned a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or related fields by August 31, 2021. The candidate must have the interest and ability to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows; contribute significantly to the advancement of science and engineering and develop a nationally recognized program of sponsored research.
Additional Information
The Department of Biomedical Engineering was established in 2017 and currently has 13 faculty members and over 300 students. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to help shape the vision for this new department. The Department of Biomedical Engineering represents the core of biomedical engineering research and teaching at UMass Amherst and the faculty members have vibrant collaborations with other departments and IALS. The faculty members also closely collaborate with individuals at the UMass Medical School located in Worcester, MA and Baystate Health in Springfield, MA.
The Institute of Applied Life Sciences was established in 2014 with an investment of more than $150 million from the Massachusetts Life Science Center and the University. IALS manages more than 30 core equipment facilities to enable its translational mission. IALS combines interdisciplinary expertise of more than 200 faculty members from 29 departments across the UMass Amherst campus with innovative industry and government relationships.
